Carrie joined Freshwater, a Minnesota water nonprofit, as Research and Policy Director in 2016. Prior to that she had a 24-year field-geology career, taught glacial geology at the U of M for 30 years, and earned a PhD and MS from the U of M and a B.A. in geology from Northwestern University. She shifted from fundamental geology research to applied and community-engaged research with a policy impact where her understanding of geology and landscapes help bridge the gap between what science provides and what a policy maker, local government official or resident needs to know. She wrote the proposal and built the team for Greater Lakes Promise in order to ensure that Great Lakes are appreciated by all and protected into the future.
