In light of a 2019 paper in the journal Science that finds a net population loss of almost three billion birds since 1970, supporting the efforts of land trusts, landowners, and conservation partners with protecting private lands, creating climate resiliency in protected areas, and managing habitats for wildlife and birds can make a significant difference in curbing these declines. The Cornell Land Trust Bird Conservation Initiative develops mutually beneficial partnerships between land trusts, landowners, and the bird conservation community. This workshop will teach why and how to use birds to accelerate and amplify land stewardship and conservation planning, discuss bird resources and funding opportunities, demonstrate how to use eBird (an online bird checklist program) and citizen science to enhance conservation decision-making, bird monitoring, and community engagement with diverse audiences, and showcase projects to inspire involvement and help learn to take the first steps.
